Aiming for Autonomous Growth and Sustainable Development of the Semiconductor Industry

Leading-edge Semiconductor Technology Center (LSTC), a Collaborative Innovation Partnership, aims for the autonomous growth and sustainable development of Japan’s semiconductor industry by promoting research and development of leading-edge semiconductor technologies, creation of new applications (use cases), and development of semiconductor human resources through international collaboration.

Greetings from the Chairman

Leading-edge Semiconductor Technology Center (LSTC) is a technology research association that aims to play a role in the sustainable and autonomous development of Japan’s semiconductor industry through research and development of cutting-edge semiconductor technology and human resource development. It was established on December 21, 2022 with the participation of Rapidus, the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, the National Institute for Materials Science, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, RIKEN, the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tohoku University, and the University of Tsukuba. Subsequently, Osaka University, Kyushu University, Nagoya University, Hiroshima University, Hokkaido University, SoftBank Corp, and National Institute of Technology joined the organization, making it an organization that leads advanced semiconductor research and human resource development in Japan, with a total of sixteen institutions participating.

Since 2023, LSTC has been advancing research and development related to next-generation semiconductors beyond the 2nm generation, formulating research themes, and promoting two NEDO projects from 2024.

In the “ Research and Development Project of the Enhanced infrastructures for Post-5G Information and Communication Systems/Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology/Technology development for Beyond 2nm and short TAT semiconductor manufacturing” LSTC is pursuing the development of device, material, and process element technologies for Beyond 2nm, as well as short-TAT and clean process equipment technologies.

In addition, in the “ Research and Development Project of the Enhanced infrastructures for Post-5G Information and Communication Systems/Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology/Development of edge-AI accelerator implemented in 2-nm node Semiconductor Technology” we are promoting the development of edge AI accelerators dedicated to edge inference processing applications, including generative AI, through international collaboration.

To strengthen the competitiveness of Japanese industries by using the developed leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing technology and AI accelerators, LSTC is studying the creation of related new industries, examining semiconductor human resource development, and promoting training projects.

We will continue conducting research and developing leading-edge semiconductor technologies and various initiatives related to human resource development.

Note: Human Resource Development

– Foundation-Level Talent/ Baseline Layer:

To develop human resources capable of improving each process of design and manufacturing of semiconductors, materials, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, as well as quality control.
It is necessary to strengthen the functions of universities and technical colleges and utilize overseas human resources.

– High-Level Talent/ Core Experts:

To develop core human resources in design, manufacturing, research and development, and quality control. It is necessary to develop human resources and infrastructure through collaboration between universities across the country, industry, and globally.

– Top Level Talent/Industry Architects and Leaders:

To develop outstanding R&D human resources who will innovate leading-edge semiconductor devices and pioneer new use cases. It is necessary to mobilize the collective power of academia and develop human resources through a leading-edge R&D system and global collaboration.

R&D projects

LSTC is currently promoting the following two NEDO projects related to leading-edge semiconductors.

PROJECT 01

Research and Development Project of the Enhanced Infrastructures for Post-5G Information and Communication Systems/Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology/Technology development for Beyond 2nm and short TAT semiconductor manufacturing

As an innovative technology for the realization of semiconductors with even higher performance than the 2nm generation (Beyond 2nm), we will develop device, material, and process element technologies for Beyond 2nm, as well as short TAT and clean process equipment technologies.

PROJECT 02

Research and Development Project of the Enhanced infrastructures for Post-5G Information and Communication Systems/Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology/
Development of edge-AI accelerators implemented in 2-nm node Semiconductor Technology

As a next-generation semiconductor design technology aimed at a finer than 2nm system, we will promote the development of an edge AI accelerator dedicated to edge inference processing applications, including generative AI, through international collaboration.

Human resource development

At LSTC, we will promote the division of roles and collaboration between the educational community, research organizations, and industry, and work to develop the necessary semiconductor human resources. In addition, we will discover and develop human resources with an international perspective through global collaboration.
